For this example I used a
cube that has 6 different materials. One for each face. Each
with a different color.

Add UV Texture to model
Buttons Window menu >> Editing (F9)
Mesh tab
UV Texture
New
give it a
unique name

Unwrap UV Texture
Select object: edit mode
Select faces to be UV Unwrapped
Note:
I used Unwrap (smart
projections) to UV Unwrap the Cube's UV Texture.
