3D View menu >> Viewport Shading >> Draw type: Textured

Add a material to the game object (if there isn't one).

Buttons Window menu >> Shading (F5) >> Material buttons

Add a texture to the material

Note:
This tutorial uses 3 textures.  1st texture is a tiled grass texture.  2nd texture is the Stencil.  3rd is a tiled mud texture.

Button Windows menu >> Shading (F5) >> Texture buttons (F6)
Texture tab
Add New
Texture type:  Image
Name:  grass

Load the 1st Texture  -- Grass_256.png

Download:
Grass_256.png
Mud_Cracked_256.png

Note:
The starting blend contains both the grass and mud textures.  Instead of loading them, you can select them for the list.
